Villagers main man Conor O’Brien looks like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth doesn’t he? Ha, fools. Having your show moved from Festsaal to Lido doesn’t mean something’s gone wrong, it means you’re selling a bicycle trailer full of tickets, cos this is Berlin and you sell a trailer load, no one has cars…or if they do you hate them cos they try to run you over all the time. Swines. O’Brien has pulled off a fairytale lightning quick rise to recognition.
Back to the band. Rising from the ashes of The Immediate, the most hotly tipped Irish band to replace the last hotly tipped Irish band who never delivered or got strangled by a huge record company, who cares, O’Brien then gathered this group around him and it’s been all peaches and blossoms since then.
In quick succession a support slot for Cass McCombs led to a deal with Domino Records, they recorded debut album Becoming a Jackal in the attic of the guitarist Tommy McLaughlin’s parent’s house and here they are, pockets full of awards and comparisons to Bright Eyes and The Frames. Nuff said. Call it folk-rock, call it singer-songwriter if you will, but they’ll surprise you live.
So, catch Villagers now or forever hold your peace.
Here’s a live video of Down under the sea, not on the album but all the official stuff has disappeared cos german youtube is shit.
